The Renault F1 Team took a significant honour in world sport yesterday evening at the annual Laureus World Sports Awards. The team was last night named ‘World Team of the Year' at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards in Barcelona, Spain.

Often dubbed ‘the sporting Oscars’, the Laureus Awards are a recognition of achievement from the world of sport. The awards were voted for by a panel of 42 sporting legends, including Pele, and motorsport legends Giacomo Agostini and Emerson Fittipaldi.

Renault F1 Team Managing Director Flavio Briatore was present in Barcelona to accept the award on behalf of the Renault F1 Team:

“This is a wonderful award for the whole Renault F1 Team. Formula 1 is a world in which the fundamental role of the team in achieving success is not always fully appreciated. At Renault, we know that a team has a heart, and that heart is its people. This award reflects the dedication, commitment and ambition of the more-than 800 women and men who made last year’s world championship success possible. Congratulations to each and every one of them.”

The Renault F1 Team currently leads the 2006 FIA Formula 1 Constructors’ World Championship, with a total of 78 points. Fernando Alonso leads the Drivers’ Championship with 54 points, while team-mate Giancarlo Fisichella lies 4th in the standings.
