Watch out for Ferrari - Alonso

By on

The reigning world champion, Fernando Alonso, knows that it will be a close battle with Ferrari this weekend in Montreal. But he’ll be taking the fight to them! Alonso was leading the race at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve last year as he had to resign after hitting the wall and hopes to do better this weekend.

Fernando, you arrive in Montreal at the top of the world championship standings, with a 23 point lead over Michael Schumacher. How do you feel?

"Good. The start of the championship has been fantastic, because I took 5 wins and 3 second places in 8 races. That gives us a solid platform. Now, we want to end the run of bad luck that we have suffered in Canada. I have never been on the podium here and I retired from the last two races. We want to change that!"

What did you learn from your retirement in 2005?

"I was pushing too hard and went off the track. That taught me that there is no point chasing the win when you only have a small chance of getting it. Sometimes, it’s better to stay calm, aim for the podium and not cost yourself points."

What are your feelings about the race ahead?

"Ferrari have had a top speed advantage since he start of the year, and they will be the favourites for the next two races. We will see what happens this weekend but this may be one of those races where we need to settle for second. But I’m not in a defeatist mood: I will win if I can. But we need to watch out for Ferrari."

From this race, the design of some rear wings will change in order to prevent any flexing. Will that change anything?

"Perhaps. But I don’t think it will make a big difference."

Are there any new developments on the car for Montreal?

"Yes. We have quite a lot of new aero parts. Some are specific to Montreal, but others are part of our normal development programme and will help us at every circuit. There are some good improvements, so I think we can be competitive here."
