Todt still confident
First and third positions in Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix weren't good enough for Ferrari boss Jean Todt, despite the Scuderia closing to within two points of Renault in the Constructors' World Championship.
"We are a bit disappointed," says Todt "because we had the potential to be first and second, but we finished first and third."
The team's chances of a third one-two of the season were hampered on lap 14, when the Safety Car was deployed. Michael Schumacher lost seven seconds in the pitlane while waiting for his team-mate, Felipe Massa, to change tyres. The delay allowed Alonso to get ahead of the seven-time World Champion.
"If I had asked Felipe to let Michael through," says Todt, "that would have been the event of the weekend. As it is, we have four races to go and we have a very fast car, with very strong Bridgestone tyres. I am convinced that we have a chance to fight for both championships."
Todt's confidence was echoed by Schumacher, who remained bullish despite the gap to Alonso extending to 12 points in the drivers' championship. "Okay, it's a little more difficult now," says Michael. "But to think that we'd give up now is a huge mistake. It's still possible for us to secure the title, and each and everyone of us in the team wants it."
The next race, the Italian Grand Prix on 10 September, is Ferrari's home race. As well as closing the gap to Alonso and Renault, they plan to announce their 2007 driver line-up there.
