A team performance - Symonds
The Renault F1 Team’s Executive Director of Engineering, Pat Symonds, congratulated the team after today’s qualifying performance. Fernando Alonso will start from pole position with team mate Giancarlo Fisichella next to him on the front row.
"Well, there’s worse things than an all-Renault front row! The 2006 qualifying format really puts the pressure on the mechanics anyway, but when the weather conditions are changing like today, it becomes crazy. We had to manage the session, anticipate the track conditions, know what type of tyre we should be using… The team did a magnificent job to rise to the challenge. The drivers were perfect too."
What type of tyre did you get pole with?"With the intermediates. Just like in Budapest a few weeks ago, they were perfect. Michelin brought us just the tyres we needed."
Are you optimistic for tomorrow?"Yes because even if it had been dry today, we believe we could have been fighting for pole. Michael Schumacher would have made life tougher of course, but we could have been right up there. And that means that whatever the conditions tomorrow, we will be racing to win."
