Doornbos on podium at Champ Car debut

Robert Doornbos grabbed a great 2nd position in his maiden Champ Car World Series start today in Las Vegas. An impressive, faultless race on from 3rd on the grid saw the Minardi Team USA driver climb up to second position at the finish. Australian driver Will Power won the season opener, reigning champion Sebastien Bourdais failed to finish.

The 68 lap race started somewhat chaotic for Doornbos. After the first start was cancelled, the Dutchman lost two positions at the second attempt. A smart strategy in combination with an excellent drive however turned Doornbos fortune around. Behind a dominating Will Power, Doornbos climbed his way up in order to finish second. Paul Tracy completed the podium.

Robert Doornbos “Wow, what a great result! I’ve really enjoyed the race. Many things were new to me, like the rolling start and the need to save fuel during the race, but everything went quite smooth. Thanks for the team who gave me a very good car and strategy for the race. To finish on the podium in my debut race is just amazing. I heard that I even was the first driver since Nigel Mansell to do this! Tonight we’re going to have a little celebration and afterwards I’ll immediately start concentrating on our next race in Long Beach next week.”
