My best qualification so far - Kovalainen

By on

The ING Renault F1 Team Finnish driver, Heikki Kovalainen, is very satisfied with his weekend so far. Kovalainen managed to qualify in the top ten for the first time in his rookie year. Heikki will start from 8th position this afternoon.

Heikki, how is the Spanish Grand Prix turning out for you?

“Pretty well. For the first time this season I didn’t have any technical problems in free practice, and this enabled me to concentrate on my technical programme. Yesterday and today we improved the car step by step. It wasn’t perfect this morning and I had a few problems with the overall balance, but I have to say it was very quick in qualifying.”

Is it the best R27 you’ve driven up till now?

“Without a doubt. Getting both cars into the top 10 was our priority and we’re very satisfied to have done so. The race, though, is tomorrow.”

Have you compromised your race strategy to achieve the best possible performance in the third part of qualifying?

“No, that’s not the team’s philosophy.”

Did you stay on the different settings compared to Giancarlo’s that you spoke about yesterday?

“We decided not to go any further in that direction, and today I used a set-up that’s pretty similar to Giancarlo’s. It helped me to push harder and to be more aggressive in the opening laps. We’ll see if it pays off tomorrow.”
