150th victory for McLaren celebrated in style
Fernando Alonso's second consecutive victory at Monaco was the 150th Formula One victory for McLaren. It was a dominant victory as the silver car of Hamilton followed Alonso home. The Spaniard leads the Championship standings with the same amount of points as his team mate, Lewis Hamilton. The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Team leads in the Constructors' Championship with 76 points, that's 20 more than rival Ferrari.
Ron Dennis, Team Boss of the McLaren team, said: “An outstanding result for the team. Both Fernando and Lewis drove so well and responded excellently to the team’s wishes of bringing both cars home safely in what was a memorable one-two result and McLaren’s 14th victory in the Principality.”
Double World Champion, Fernando Alonso, was very pleased after his victory at the Principality. "I think it has been a very nice surprise to see how the team was performing this weekend. I’ve had 16 or 17 wins in my career and I never won with more than a minute to the third guy. For sure, this is the easiest and probably the nicest victory so far," he said.
Team mate Lewis Hamilton said: “To finish second and running similar lap times to Fernando at the prestigious Monaco Grand Prix makes me very happy. The team has done a fantastic job, and Fernando and I were able to give them the result they deserved."
In the Ferrari camp, Felipe Massa had praising words for the Woking based team, but remains optimistic about his chances in the Championship. "McLaren definitely showed incredible pace today. I think that even if I pushed 150 percent on the limit, it would have been the same in the end. They were pretty quick today. There was nothing I could do with them. I could only expect some mistakes or something like that, or maybe a retirement. I was just thinking of finishing third, trying to score as many points as possible. OK, now the gap is a little bit bigger, but five points is nothing in a championship like this, so let’s work hard for the next race. The package for this race made it impossible to catch them, so let’s try to be in front in the next races," the Brazilian said.
The F1 circus will now move to North-America for the back-to-back races at Canada and the USA. In 2 weeks, the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve will host the Canadian Grand Prix.
