We want an attacking, aggressive race - Chevrier
Happy faces in the Renault garage after a pressured, but successful, qualifying session. The ING Renault F1 Team’s engine chief, Denis Chevrier talks about the qualifying and what the goals are for Renault's race.
"It was a good, and comes on top of a productive morning. Independent of our position on the grid, it was good to see the cars finish P6 and P7 in Q2, when the cars are light on fuel and can show their maximum performance… The final position is less representative than what we learned in that second knockout session. So it’s very encouraging, although there is a note of caution because we know that Indianapolis is an unusual circuit with its long straight and twisty infield. But it shows we are improving the car, making it quicker and easier to drive, and that it’s using its tyres well. That’s important for the weeks ahead."
What is the goal for Heikki, starting from P6 on the grid?"The first thing to note is that we have a long straight after the start. The first corner is taken at medium speed so there is the possibility of gaining several positions with a good start. If he can be 5th or 4th coming out of the first corner, then he will be able to run an attacking, aggressive race. Heikki is likely to be on a similar fuel load to the people around him. The top 4 or 5 will have a slight advantage in the opening laps if they are running lighter, but a good start for him could open the way to a spectacular race performance. But naturally, the start will be crucial!"
