A good weekend with no mistakes - Kovalainen

By on

The Finnish Renault F1 Team driver, Heikki Kovalainen, has had a strong weekend so far in Indianapolis. The rookie will start the US Grand Prix from 6th position on the starting grid and he will be looking to build on it in the race.

Tell us about your qualifying session…

"I think the result shows that every race is a fresh start. I didn’t run enough in Montreal because I made mistakes, and didn’t have time to get the car set-up right… Here, everything went well. I had a good weekend, no mistakes, no technical problems. And so the result is there. It really helps to have a weekend without any problems!"

What is the real potential of the Renault in qualifying?

"I think I am where I should be. This morning, we had hoped we could fight with BMW, especially Heidfeld. But in qualifying, we couldn’t. The two front rows are out of our reach, and I think P6 reflects our potential at the moment."

How confident are you for the race?

"I am very confident. If we look at the times this morning, we are very consistent in our performance. We don’t have any worries. Like everybody, we saved some new tyres for the race… so I am confident. Clearly, it’s better to be starting from the third row than the back of the grid."

What are you expecting for the race?

"You can overtake at the start. The reaction time when the lights go out will be crucial, especially as the grip is not fantastic on the grid. But in any case, I am really looking forward to the start. You can overtake at this circuit if you get a good tow into turn 1."

What tyres will you use at the start? Would the softer compound help?

"I haven’t spoken to the engineers yet, and both options are possible. You’ll see tomorrow afternoon!"
