Pirro,Biela and Werner win Le Mans
Audi have yet again won the Le Mans race with a diesel powered car. Car No 1 of team Audi North America has won the race with 11 laps margin to the Peugeot No 8 of Lamy/Bourdais/Sarrazin. Car No 16 of Pescarolo Sport came home in 3rd place. In 5th place overall is the 009 Aston Martin and the winner of LMGT1 class.
This year's Le Mans marks the first where Audi had competition from another diesel powered team. The German team brought 3 R10 TDi cars to the event and managed to win it yet again. Yet, only the winner managed to get to the finish as the two other Audis suffered mechanical problems.
Peugeot on the other hand performed well but overall could match the Audi pace. Until 3 hours before the end of the race, car No 7 with Jacques Villeneuve at the steering wheel was in second position, 4 laps down on the leader. The car however suffered an engine problem and was not able to continue the race, even after tens of minutes to repair the problems. Car No 8 could save the day for Peugeot and it looks likely that next year will be a far closer fight between the new French cars and the well known Audi's.
David Richards was another happy man at the end of this race as all 6 entered Aston Martins managed to get to the finish. He also noted that there are several things coming up for Aston, including a possible outright win at Le Mans. This very statement would mean Aston will be introducing an LMP1 car for one of the next events.
