Heidfeld's lonesome races

By on

Placed fifth in the 2007 Drivers' Championship, Nick Heidfeld has contested numerous races where the gaps to the drivers in front of him and those behind was very big. He is accustomed to this situation.

With 58 points to his tally, Nick has already wrapped up fifth place in the Drivers' Championship. Prior to the season finale, the BMW Sauber F1 Team driver's lead over his sixth-placed team-mate, Robert Kubica, is 23 points.

On the way to securing this remarkable position, Nick Heidfeld has contested numerous "lonesome" races. Several times he has crossed the finish line with a big lead over his closest pursuer but with a clear gap to the driver in front. "It's a different kind of racing for sure," reveals Nick, "But I guess I did pretty well coming to terms with this situation. I never experienced concentration problems so one could say I felt quite comfortable."

In Australia and Belgium, Nick's gap to the driver ahead and the driver behind amounted to over ten seconds, while in Italy, Malaysia and Turkey, the gaps to the drivers ahead and those behind were also substantial. The German's results underline the BMW Sauber F1 Team's position as third power on the grid: the lead over the following teams was quite comfortable in 2007. However, the step to the level of the top two teams hasn't been made yet. The team is keen on changing this situation in 2008, and wants to move even closer to the very top.
