Renault...the obvious choice?

By on

More than two weeks after Alonso and McLaren announced that the two times World Champion will leave the Woking-based team, the Spaniard still hasn't been announced with another team. Alonso has been courted by several teams, but it appears that moving back to his old team, Renault, is the only real option for the Asturian.

Alonso has been linked with Toyota, Red Bull, BMW Sauber and Renault. But as two of the four teams already announced their 2008 driver line-up and as Toyota is expected to announce Timo Glock as second race driver at the Toyota Motorsports Festival on 24-25 November, Alonso's only concrete choice is Renault.

BMW Sauber had already announced Nick Heidfeld and Robert Kubica for 2008 and so there is no room to harbour Fernando. Red Bull's Christian Horner declared earlier this week that, although the team is very flattered that Alonso has been linked with a seat at their team, the team will stick to their already announced driver line-up with David Coulthard and Mark Webber.

The only team that remains is Renault. The problem that has arisen is that Alonso only wants a one-year deal so that he would be a free man when the good race seats open up for 2009, but Flavio Briatore has offered the Spaniard a contract of minimum 2 years.

As the first winter test session has been concluded this week, it is expected that Alonso will soon announce his decision to be able to participate in the coming test sessions.
