Alonso laments terrible strategy
In an interview with Marca, Fernando Alonso lamented a terrible strategy mistake by Renault as the cause of not being able to finish or get any points. His position was ruined and he consequently went off the circuit when attempting to make up for it.
"We had a horrible mistake with the strategy when we stopped with the safety car. We were still six or seven laps. Heidfeld was in the same situation but continued and passed all of us. When I came out it was true that I was third, but it was misleading" he said.
In fact, Heidfeld managed to get a lead during the laps after the SC procedure that put him in a comfortable position to make his stop and still be well placed.
After being stuck behind Heidfeld for 10 laps, Alonso tried everything to pass the German as he would fall out of the points after his pitstop. As he slightly went off the clean line, the bad Canadian surface cost him badly.
"I was outside the points and had to do everything possible, but I took the dirty part and I left. This happens in racing, but it - the strategy - simply was too big a mistake."
