The part about PU positioning (Merc vs Ferrari) is very interesting. Merc has pushed PU as backward as possible, while Ferrari has pushed PU as forward as possible. There were rumors that with the understeer-y nature of new cars, RedBull was trying to put PU forward and immediately behind the cockpit. We haven't seen RedBull yet, but Ferrari clearly has done this.

I can't take that article seriously when he uses the render which positions sidepods well behind the mirrors! Real car has mirrors connected to the side pods. In fact, if you look at it right, Ferrari also has mirrors at the start of their sidepods like Mercedes. Silly stuff. Not to mention that Ferrari seems to have a "bulge" at the front of the sidepods and the real sidepod starts behind while Mercedes (on a real car) doesn't show this type of a bulge. It could mean Ferrari mounted engine further back than that.

Here - is there a big difference? Did Mercedes mount their engine behind or ahead of Ferrari - impossible to tell, especially not from a render which shows some kind of a fake car.

Is there U shaped part of the body left and right of the airbox (below INEOS red), starting next to drivers helmet looking like really small ferrari shaped sidepods but above the real sidepids?
You can see it on this two images and it is well seen from the side on other images.
Or my eyes are playing me?

Engine can't sit outside of the sidepod. That's the only relation. My point is that Hughes couldn't really tell where the engine is mounted and he is basing his analysis on a render of a car that looks nothing like a real thing.

Mark Hughes in his article claims Mercedes mounted the engine further back. Quote:
"In order to maximise the distance between the front axle and the beginning of the sidepods within the permitted wheelbase, the power unit seems to have been mounted a long way back (as also on the Mercedes-engined Aston Martin), implying a short gearbox casing. It can be seen how the engine airbox and the associated plumbing begins much further behind the cockpit than on, say, the Ferrari."

It even looks like the front of the floor is higher up than the rear of the floor! Something like "reverse rake" let's say :P

It protrudes below red merc star and finishes near the first grey merc star.

My educated guess would be space for cooling louvres depending on ambient conditions.
