McLaren MCL36

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The FOV from this camera is a lot greater than the regular T-Cam, that's why everything looks so out of place.

"My guess with those is that what they're doing is they're going to spool up a vortex along them that's going to spin that way (see image 1) as they go along here, inwash some of that air down the bottom of the vortex and hopefully suppress some of the cockpit losses and lossy air from the cockpit from escaping out. Of course, it will have a problem if there's any high up losses as it will drag them out (see image 2)."

Mirror arms are also much less shapely than the launch car.

Front wing maybe leaning towards Ferrari shape?
It's curious that physical parts that time & money went into manufacturing would change so much in the space of weeks.

Does that suggest that it is genuinely a decision of weeks ago that McLaren decided to change the shape of the front wing, and earlier versions of the car were indeed developed based on airflow coming off the other, quite different, front wing? To make such a big front wing shape change at a late stage can't be optimal can it? Unless it provided such a big gain both immediately and looking towards future development?

What happens to the launch front wing & launch mirrors? Relegated to the 'old parts' bin for building show cars already?

Edit - My bad, it is indeed the same wing. It just looks different because of the angle of the photograph.

Is it me or is there very little anti-dive on the suspension geometry on the MCL36?

Looks like a sensor of some sort (it is in the right sort of place to be measuring the effect of tyre wake).

Very interesting strake layout; all very outboard, but (from this angle) look to be creating a converging tunnel entrance.

Is the nose both shorter and fatter at the top compared to launch day?

Nose will change I imagine. Launch car had carbon covers.
