I wonder if it’s something that be managed some with the shock valving and teams inexperience with ground effects are throwing them off.

Obviously it’s ultimately an aero issue.

also of note!

Autosport!
11:09 Amazingly, no stoppages or red flags in this opening day! Apart from a slight excursion from Max Verstappen in the gravel, everyone kept it clean.

Sounds like a few teams have porpoising issues.
Every car will have this especially on slow corners. The alpha tauri shakedown video had visoble pitching of the car.
It's a high speed behaviour?!
Seen the Gary anderson explanation, but i think slow corners after huge braking are prime candidate as the ground effect downforce could massively drop pitching the car back and forth.

and Lando had a brief pitlane stoppage (yellow flag only)

Hughes said all the cars have issues with it, including the fastest ones

Okay so there's 2 different behaviours - the high speed porposising is resulting from an aerodynamic stall when the ride height drops - the ride height then rises allowing the air to reattach - the ride height drops and stalls... etc

The low speed bouncing is more likely the tyre slipping and gripping. The stiffer sidewall tyres may make this more common.

So sounds like a lot of mechanical chassis issues to me.

More unsprung weight, plus stiffer suspensions to control pitch, less sidewall, etc.

I suspect a bit of the gains will be found in the shocks / set up.

Larger diameter wheels / tires should run over small dips / the curbs easier, but they also are likely prone to wandering in any amount of dips, especially in the braking zone.

It’s still not as extreme as a Datsun 510 that showed up to a race with the rear on the bump stops. It looked like a low rider going down the straight (and then the door blew off).

ummmm...Lando was 2nd fastest in S3. Also, every driver was lifting off at the end of the laps so its very hard to make a determination of S3 times

he was on the softest tires, he probably should have been the fastest in sector 3!

If cars are having porpoising issues, I wonder how their kerb riding ability will be affected. Especially on some (of specific geometry) kerbs that exists on some tracks.

Guys, again, for the millionth time, lap times are useless. Today is about data collection for all the simulations; aero, suspension, PU, tire models, etc

LMAO are we really analyzing these test times? On day 1?
