So Lando is 4 tenths off, purple in the middle sector and not using DRS....

What tyres? Sounds like a fast lap.
It would be absolutely shocking if this car can actually make up 1 or 2 tenths in sections with faster corners. And then lose almost 1.5 in the rest of the track.

In terms of long run pace, it's not looking good right now. Laptimes are underwhelming.

However, Alonso is absolutely flying on the Alpine. Almost matching Max and Charles. I am enjoying the prospect of a possible return to form for Alonso.
It was purple at the time others went a bit faster after. Lando made a mistake in S3 as well
His S3 on Softs was slower than his S3 on Hards… That’s a giveaway

I know we dont know fuel loads and engine modes but lando us on a long run lapping in the 39's and max is also on a long run on the same tyre running in the low 37's, I really hope we aren't 2 seconds a lap slower on long pace.
Same against Ferrari, Leclerc running low 37’s on mediums on his long runs… But, this is still practice and the team could be running to a lap time to keep learning about the car… I doubt there is a 2 second difference in race pace, that is just a bit too much
Just hope its the case of what Mclaren did numerous times last year by being slow on friday and then dialing in the setup for FP3 then doing well in quali, who can forget Lando's statement in Imola last year where he thought they would struggle to get to Q3 and he nearly put it on pole.
They did lose a lot of learning time in testing due to the brakes, therefore they have to use this practice sessions to continue the learning phase of testing with the long runs they weren’t able to do last week… This means running at a constant pace to check the effects of different settings, etc.

I don’t think the team will be fighting at the front tomorrow or the race, but I don’t think they will be at the tail end of the midfield either.

Eh, Sainz was running mid 38's on softs in his short stint at the end. Very likely a high fuel run. I don't think McLaren will be that far off tomorrow or Sunday, same with Alpine.
The teams have a lot of data at their disposal, if they have been claiming that the midfield is bunched up, it probably is and if they think they are looking to be in a decent spot, they should be… More often than not, they know where they stand compared to the rest.

No, because it still looks like they could be 4th fastest tomorrow. And I don't know what you expected, but that was always going to be the target, realistically.

So McLaren loses most of it’s time in the power sensitive parts of the track? Seems like more engine mode related than anything else… Seems the PU is really turned down, I will be hard pressed to think that Mercedes is way behind every other PU manufacturer now.

Why would that be the target?
You had a better car than Ferrari the last 2 seasons on avarage.
Now they look like the team to beat, why McLaren couldn't?

Sector 2 is the giveaway for a decent Stab at any sort of pecking order imho. The engine is clearly turned down so if you account that for S2 time then we are pretty darned close to the leaders. I’m cautiously optimistic.

Ferrari has been the better team for a couple of years now. They had a setback in 2020 because of the power unit debacle.

In 2019, McLaren was nowhere near Ferrari.

Last year as well, Ferrari had both the better team and the better car. They were consistent the entire season, and they reacted incredibly quickly to whatever issues they had.

So why 4th is still the target? Because, I hate to admit this, McLaren is just not good enough to battle beyond that. At least not yet.

Would be nice to have them closer to the top 3 this year though.

Is this based on just the faster car or average of both cars? Because Daniel had a horrific lap

FP2 best sectors. Lando's S2 is pretty good.

I think the car is not yet dialed in and they were running with a lower engine mode. Let's see how the brake fix will hold in qualy and race.

They consistently had races where they list position after position that's for sure lol

They did well but table aside I don't think there was much difference between the teams. Spa and Sochi both massively unfortunate, sainz taking out Lando in Brazil... The table flattered Ferrari, no disrespect to their incredible return to pace from 20.
