Mercedes W14

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Mercedes has by far the biggest rear wing on the grid!

Apart from that it’s also by far the oldest one! It’s almost the exact same wing they debuted the W13 with! Hope they’ve got something better coming up because this can’t be the best wing they’ve designed!
Very early stages of testing… Let’s wait a bit for the teams to bring all their new parts on track :)

Imo they are just comparing the data to last years W13.

Let’s see what happens this afternoon with the rear wing.

If they run with less rake then a rear wing producing the same drag and downforce will look larger in isolation.

Has there been any more information about the rumored problems Merc has been having with the suspension breaking and chassis flexing? Was there any truth in that?

Yep, my first thoughts as well. If they're running the biggest rear wing, either they have massively reduced drag elsewhere or they have found a few more ponies as I believe their philosophy was to rely more on the floor to create DF thereby allowing them to have smaller wings to reduce drag. Perhaps this is just to gather data and we'll see different designs later.

These were apparently false rumours.

Wolff saying in press conference the car is balanced, they have a solid base to work on and there was no bouncing this morning, a part from the huge bump at the end of the main straight, which is affecting everyone :

The singular source was "Judge13" so no real credibility can be attached

Their 2022 cockpit was already far forward, much further than Ferrari & obviously RB
With their fuel tank shape, it's not easy to have a backward cockpit...

I don't think this comparison is accurate. It a well known fact that Mercedes had the most rearward driver position in 2022.
The comparison is very accurate for a human being (look at the wheels). The pics were taken by the same photographer in the same place and in a short amount of time. And obviously the camera angle is near perfect and 100 times bette than the pics you re using.
+ with the fuel tank shape Mercedes has, you cannot technically place the cockpit far rearwards like RB or MCL, unless you add 50cm to the car's length or width.
RB & MCL clearly had the most backward cockpit, while Mer and Alpine were one of the most forward
On Sky Germany it was just confirmed - the cockpit was moved towards the front axle, by almost 20cm.
