It was close, but Alonso was using slightly fresher tyres and towards the end of the stint Max was ~3 tenths quicker.
Max backed off a lap to avoid Dvries and cooled the tyres that allowed him to gain time again.
He backed off for a few corners and then pushed several more laps. The effect would have been minimal. Alonso was using Mediums first but locked up, then swapped to new softs when most of the other cars had already done 2-3 laps on their soft tyres. Again, I think the pace is comparable between the two, but the advantage seemed to shift towards RB later, especially when you account for Max using older tyres.
