That mental turmoil and focusing enough to perform at the top level is really nothing to sneeze at. I am not being bold to attribute the "gapping" of George more to Lewis' mental recovery than "gelling" with any particular car attributes am I?
I think it's a combination of a lot of things, recovery from AD21, not testing/suboptimal setups, belief that his feedback is being heard, updates to the package, greater trust in the car, and most importantly for Lewis, hope.
Perhaps the team really didn't consider his feedback last season and over winter and now they have, and he's faster in the car because of it?
Lewis is a spiritual guy, I think he's in a good mental place and the team and car have given him hope of winning, hence he's doing Lewis things in the car.
As for Russell, my dad always used to say the power of Tiger Woods is that he's Tiger Woods. The fact that you're in competition with the best in the world is hard on your subconscious. In his prime, Tiger rarely made mistakes on Sunday and won a lot of tournaments because of it. Anyone paired with the likes of Lewis, Max, Fernando is going to struggle mentally, especially when they start to make mistakes. Doubt creeps in and if you don't have the mental fortitude to overcome, you're finished.
