The worse is to hit this weekend. F1 will be testing the new ATA (Alternative Tyre Allocation) Qualifying format this weekend. This Qualifying format will be:
Q1 - Hard Tyres
Q2 - Medium Tyres
Q3 - Soft Tyres
Great, more "fake excitement" in F1.

What next? Power boost bonuses that can activated by jumping the car off a ramp and through a suspended hoop?
Trackmania speed boosts !

I think it's about forcing the teams to spend more time on track to ensure they don't get caught out by an improving track / tyre warming issue.

One thing I do hate about it is that it prevents a "lower" team from rolling the dice and chucking a soft on at the end of Q1 to see if they can get in to Q2. It effectively cements the grid in the general farm of the WCC standings. So fewer chances of a mixed up grid. In fact, it reduces the chance of excitement, now I think about it.
Nope, literally just to save 20 sets of tires as part of the sustainability initiative. Now tire availability goes from 13 sets to 11 sets per team.
Ha ha, they could do that and more by cutting down on some of the unnecessary races on the calendar. But that would cost LM money so...
I don't mind the extra races. What I think they COULD eliminate is the sprint shootout. One shot at Qualifying. Results count for sprint race AND Sunday race.

One shot qualy and you’re totally dependent on who gets the best conditions, especially with the field being so close comparatively.

I assumed they meant a single qualifying hour that was then used for both the sprint and the race, rather than separate qualifying sessions for each race. It would free up some time for more FP which, I think, is a better option (assuming we can't just scrap the sprint format altogether [-o< )
If you are more fortunate than others, build a larger table not a taller fence.

On top of that, how tf do you sell a 10 minutes session? They only need around 4 minutes for outlap to pushlap, everyone will sit in the garage waiting for the last lap, half the session would be dead time.

Half the excitement in qualifying is the build up to Q3, where you finally get to see the outright performance of each driver/car. In theory is sounds nice, in practice it won't be at all.

No no, I meant one qualifying session. Keep FP1 and FP2 on Fri, qualifying Saturday morning, sprint in the afternoon the Sunday race. No need for 2 separate qualifying sessions.

Perez is going to really struggle in Q1 if he has not sorted his prep lap issues out!!
It would hurt any driver or car that has tyre warming issues.

And a small group of Mercedes aero techs sit in the corner of the canteen, rocking slightly in their chairs, muttering "I told you so, I told you so, I told..."

Sources: Mike Elliott is beside himself. Driving around downtown Brackley begging (thru texts) to Toto for his TD position back
