The biggest problem is that Alpine and Renault are attempting to win in F1 on a limited budget. This almost never works. At the moment their performance looks like a mutant cross between Ford while they owned the Jaguar team, and Williams-BMW. Both were stories of under-achievement by organizations reporting to boards with little to no patience and understanding of F1.

It's in the job description. He's supposed to improve the situation. There's no sign of improvement since Feb '22.

Otmar was the one in the position to place the contracted Ocon on loan at Williams, while securing Alonso and Piastri for Alpine.

Otmar is also responsible for keeping Fry and not losing Fry to Williams either!

The fact that this is still a thing after almost three quarters of a decade is the real issue. Alpine just havent been getting their basics right and its hard to understand how that can be the case with a team with enough resources over such a period of time.

It's debatable whether Renault/Alpine really had enough resources to achieve their goals, without this being an excuse for mistakes that were made. Recently it was shown their simulator is very outdated and I wonder why aren't they lobbying for an increase in the CapEx limit like Williams.

Honda had realized by 2017 that split turbo was the way to go. It took Renault another 2 years. Then it took them 3 years to get that PU out of the factory. It still had reliability issues and now it has come out that they are down by around 22hp to others as per FIA's estimation even though the whole idea of having a unreliable PU last year was to push the performance before the freeze. This alludes to something wrong thats deeper than a lack of tools.

I don't think he ever had that type of power. He was there to bring in BWT and do Rossi's dirty work in the media. I say this as someone with very little sympathy for him.

One thing I take away from this is he states it takes years (i.e. Mercedes after Brawn and Red Bull after Jaguar) to build a winning team.
Recent events do ofcourse not help in the timeline Alpine set for itself.

if this leadership turbulence continue, Alpine will shortly compete with the like of Alpha Tauri and Haas at the bottom of the championship. Even Williams (under Vowles leadership), the way how they pave their long term strategy, I will not be surprise if William will be a serious contender in 2026, at least a midfield leader.

I feel sorry for Otmar. He ended up last Summer having to BS the media over the Piastri fiasco and Alonso jumping to Aston Martin. He knew he was defending the indefensible. Alpine should never have gone to the CRB. It merely compounded their embarrassment.
