That's what Sainz did at Singapore by starting on Medium while Leclerc in 3rd started on Softs. Track position being even more important at Singapore...
Actually, I think many front runners will think about starting on the Hard
Leclerc decided to start on the soft by himself to have the best possible chance at overtaking Russell in the first lap and thus be able to protect Sainz in the first stint. It was a "suicidal" move.
I thought it was a strategic decision from Ferrari in order to control the race by having two cars in front ?
The og plan was the medium. Leclerc decided for the soft, so he would have higher chances to be ahead of Russell after the start.

Anyway the usual simulator from Fabrega
this is the same order as brought up in the f1.com article Friday evening:

So I guess it's fair to assume that they are the source for all his "simulations".

Fabrega's simulations arrive before the weekend. The f1.com content is (i thought), based on free practice.

If Ferrari is only down 2 tenths in race pace, no one is passing them today.

yeah, but they probably send out a pre-weekend simulation to the journalists as well then. That's what I meant to say.

This was well played by Seb. On the absolute limit, no doubt.

Daniel Ricciardo at P4 feels like one of those over qualifications where he'll quickly drop to outside of the top 10.

Likely.

I hope this single performance (in a sea of average performances) does not give him a shot at a Redbull seat next year. That needs some fresh exciting blood to challenge Max once in a while.

don't think so. Wouldn't be too surprised if he can even challenge the Ferraris.

His pace in free practice was very good even on long runs. The Alpha Tauri carries a lot of downforce which becomes important when there is less available at altitude. The car has also been strong in low speed all year. People have slept on how much the AT has been improved and how much downforce it has as they just struggled at recent circuits

They've been losing a ton on the straights which means Mexico suits them as drag matters less.

I don't think it was a huge overperformance to be honest. And even if he goes backwards in the race, I don't think it will be more than a couple of positions

So basically Sainz is given permission to fight Leclerc and Max will stroll through. Brilliant. Hoping to be proven wrong

the team also confirmed that the Honda engine still comes with an advantage at altitude, contrary to what Verstappen said
