that's true, but having two sets of new softs in Q3 was key, the team said. So Yuki helped achieving that. Most others needed to do a 2nd run in Q1, Ricciardo not

His pace in free practice was very good even on long runs. The Alpha Tauri carries a lot of downforce which becomes important when there is less available at altitude. The car has also been strong in low speed all year. People have slept on how much the AT has been improved and how much downforce it has as they just struggled at recent circuits

They've been losing a ton on the straights which means Mexico suits them as drag matters less.

I don't think it was a huge overperformance to be honest. And even if he goes backwards in the race, I don't think it will be more than a couple of positions

the team also confirmed that the Honda engine still comes with an advantage at altitude, contrary to what Verstappen said

It's not just the engine as the only place that Ricciardo lost much to Verstappen and Ferraris were the straights. The car is just quick through the slow corners here and has a lot of downforce (but struggles with efficiency)

Seems sensible given how good of a strategy it was last year. M-H also gives you the option to swap to the 2-stopper if the opportunity arises or if deg is higher

I wonder how many years and complaining will it take the FIA to realize that the qualifying format is obsolete and it sucks. (sucked from the beginning in my opinion)

I would go with a two lap qualifying with 3 cars on track (one per sector) simultaneously. The order I guess would be best to be completely random. Without giving any forewarning who gets to go when, so they wouldn't game the system.
