RB20 speculation

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

That dark bit confused me too, but from another angle that's just the mirror stay/turning vane - visible on both sidepods. (ar3gp's image)

this is definitely like last year's mercedes sidepod

This whole debate about underbite/overbite, looks like "push vs pull" debate. Both solutions have pros and cons. But fundamentally it all depends on what the team wants to achieve in terms of airflow management. Did Mercedes made a mistake scrapping overbite idea based on what Red Bull is doing now? I would say no.
The suspension debate has had a clear convergence towards push-rod rear and either one front. This is much more intriguing because you had the dominant car of all time incrementally developing towards more underbite, only for its successor to flip the script. Meanwhile you have everyone else (except McL) going towards underbite or removing their overbite (Merc). The emperor has swapped clothes with the peasants
I don't agree with you on the push-rod, but that is not the point. Yes, it's intriguing that Red Bull changed the approach, does it mean that every other team with underbite is wrong? Hell nah.

Did some messing around with various photos and ended up with this one that might give the best view of the inlets so far

+1 Starting to see how far the upper forward suspension mounting has been moved backward.

I'm not sure if it has moved much if any. Don't use the driver number for comparison, use the pitot tube. It looks like the driver number location is moved closer to the cockpit.

Tbf it seems they have moved some of the livery aspects around so it isn't great to use them to compare. From that picture is looks as though the suspension arm has move above the red line along the side of the chassis, but from other angles it can be seen that that line itself has moved down.

This all reminds me of the late 90s to early 2000s.
First you had to have a highnose, then you had to take it down again because of McLaren, after Ferrari became champion in 2000, even McLaren raised it, only to find that the Italians wore it down again in 2001...
At some point later, all teams had them somewhere around the middle.

It's almost comical how they are following so many of the W14's ideas (be it launch spec, or post monaco), whereas Mercedes themselves has seemingly abandoned these to go in favor of ideas initially introduced by RedBull in their W15

To be fair, Mercedes were quite clear that the sidepods weren't the issue. Although the driving position Hamilton complained about was as a result of having the bury the radiators in the chassis, elongating the fuel tank. Their cooling solution is either similar, something not even thought of or compromised as Merc had in the W13/14 causing them to turn the engine down somewhat.

We don't have the answer to that question yet, but so far RB has proved to be the most credible team in terms of concept during this regulation set. If they changed from something that was working they wouldn't do it on a whim.
