Another break from Norris before coming back for another fast lap, a slow 1st sector followed by a purple second sector.
Lost 4 tenths running wide in T4 before clawing some of it back. Just watched the onboard replay, looks decent.

The 4 tenths difference wasn't at T4 alone. Norris was very slow on straight which makes a difference for S1 time+ Ferrari's best sector is S1 so maybe McLaren shouldn't expect to match them there

Interesting, T4 doesn't explain the low top speed though so that's interesting in terms of time in the bank.

To whoever yesterday said no bottoming when I mentioned it...Motorsport live commentary:

15:07 Riding onboard with Norris for that lap and the bottoming out of his McLaren down the straight sounds more like the London Underground than an F1 car.

Car is bottoming more than any other car by far when you watch the onboards, don't know what to make of it, but it surely sounds wired on the onboards.

It was the same last year. You could hear it onboard.

It is not porpoising though, it's the floor scraping along the ground. They run the car very low. If they can get away with it in terms of plank wear, it is not really a problem.

Is it more just our onboard makes it sound worse than others?

Just watching the Ferrari on board- the bottoming out is quieter but the same head bobbing happens - the track cameras don’t seem to show a car with anything out of the ordinary?

yeah, it's the mic position on the car that is making it sound worse

Bottoming out makes me think of porpoising, which isn't the case? But, last year the plank noise was also loud on the car.

A big portion of the work appears to have been towards getting the Mclaren closer to the ground. It's not anything like porpoising it's a natural side effect of the car running stiff and low, but it was happening last year also. it's not really new or an issue as far as we are aware, but it is the reason why the RB and the Mclaren struggled on the bumps last year. We will find out how it deals with the bumps at a later date, but there's nothing to suggest it's an issue.

Put another way, if they aren't cutting it that fine and scraping the ground, they aren't going as fast as they can so it's a positive sign.

Edit: Meant Mclaren but put Merc

One of my favourite songs is comfortably numb, which is probably how the majority of drivers butts feel under this formula with these stiff cars!
