A peaky Newey car would fit Leclercs driving style perfectly. He would embarrass Hamilton.
In the max budget years , Rory Byrne actually beat Adrien Newey.
Newey was massively nerfed by Ron Dennis crazy management style and Mercedes engine losing competitiveness compared to Ferrari. Moreover, Ferrari had Michael Schumacher.
Despite this, he was still able to deliver 2 WDC capable cars with the 2003 and 2005 McL.
If not for the accident, Schumacher could have easily won 1999 title as that Ferrari was better than McLaren. Ferrari bagged WCC and that's a reflection of the car's overall performance. Even 1998, both cars were evenly matched. 2003 and 2005 weren't outstanding in terms of performance. In 2003, Ferrari, McLaren and at times Williams and Renault were evenly matched. 2005 was a sham with tyre war where one manufacturer got it grossly wrong that gave advantage to the other manufacturer who did a decent job in a changed regulation. McLarens didn't really stood out in any significant way.
