Russell playing interference with an illegal car would top off the weekend.

So, no cooldown lap to pickup loose rubber bites George?
interesting speculation, even if made in jest. What would pickup on cooldown lap be worth? Especially in combination with tires that did like 30 laps...
We're there even any marbles to pick up here? We just had a race where the winner did 3/4 of the race on one tyre.
No marbles pickup here since they turn into pitlane after race finish without completing victory lap

I always thought rubber pickup was for minimum height measure.
Pretty sure it’s for weight. I’m almost certain it’s also pointless as if there is excessive pickup, or the weight is borderline, different tyres can be requested to be fitted for the weigh.

No I kean given the very low tyre deg in this race that allowed George to do 3/4 of the rac3 on one tyre, would there even be a lot of marbles to pick up even if they did a cool.dow lap?

He will get let off with there being no marbles on track due to the lack of wear and thus is a mitigating circumstance. So no DSQ, that my prediction but lets wait a see.

If tire wear is the problem, then it seems to me that a simple solution here is that cars should always be weighed with a set of fresh tires fitted. Discouraging bold strategies like a risky 1 stop for stuff like this seems counterintuitive for the competition.

Won't help George out here if course - this is for the future.

Rules are specific, they have to reach minimum weight AT ALL TIMES that includes when tyres are worn.

This is what they did years ago when running illegally under weight mid race then refuelling near end, I believe.

Same team though Tyrell originally now MB

This is just black and white, not much decision making. DSQ is correct even though it's harsh. RUS deserved the win, but that's how it goes sometimes.

I fail to see the comparisons to the refueling at end of race since cars are weighed without fuel these days, and refueling has been banned.

I simply don't think minimum weight and tire strategies are two things that should have anything to do with each other, and I can't find a good argument for why it should be in the first place. The tires are spec parts (with the exception of the lug nuts), and having drivers collect pebbles at the end of a race for the purpose of weight gain already seems like a dubious practice - just do away with it.

There's no good reason you can't weigh a car with fresh tires fitted to ensure consistency.

Yeah, Mercedes goofed up massively letting this happen. Speculation: the new asphalt made the track a lot faster, but also increased tyre wear, and the temp difference probably also contributed to higher tyre wear than they expected, which the long stint Russell did made critical.

Hate it when post race DSQ undoes what we saw on track as a result, but it's been part of the sport for very long so we'll just have to live with it.

Merc must be really pushing the boundaries, three times in 4 seasons they have been found infringing the rules and been DSQ
