Well, the FIA checked his tyres, then put the dry weather tyres on, as can be seen in teds notebook, 10 mins later, GR is dq'ed. If it was the tyres, he wouldnt have been dq'ed with the pre approved fia test tyre.

And Pirelli woud have come out and said it was the tyres instead of giving a long explaination on how well the tyres held up and didnt wear out as much as expected...
Ohh and Merc said it wasnt just the tyres......
Any thing else?
That makes perfect sense.

At least it was just an ordinary miscalculation on the part of MB and nothing as nefarious as the BAR Honda 2004 fiasco where they had a "secret" fuel tank to help scavenging.
If I remember right, BAR wasn't the only team doing that, but they were the ones who got penalized. Call it an innovation or call it cheating, such is F1.

Regarding Mercedes, it sounds like they just flubbed this trying to get as close as possible to the minimum weight. They only had an issue with one car, which is interesting. Maybe it was a botched ballast calculation? I don't know how much both sides of the garage talk with set-ups. I find it hard to believe that running the tires that much longer caused them the issue. At least we know they don't have a problem with chassis weight unlike some other teams.

There’s one variable that everyone has overlooked.

The chassis are probably within a very close weight of each other, but the 798kg includes the drivers weight. So I guess the possibility of George weighing more than Lewis is completely there. Or Lewis might weigh more than George.

I’m sure 1.5kg between drivers is easily doable too

Right, but how did they botch it now? They've been weighed and passing all season long.

That’s true!

But yeah, they have clearly botched something.

Question, if it was the tires , how come LH didn’t get dsq after Silverstone 2020 ?
It wasnt the tyres, and " damaged " parts can be replaced.
Now this is strange, as Shovlin says, part of it was actually the tires.

Shovlin also quoted as saying

“But you are into the hundredths of a second per lap. It will be very small because when you are talking about amounts like one or two kilos, they do not amount to a lot of lap time.”

When previously, to a man, the F1 working contingent tell us that each kilo costs performance. And from memory, 1 tenth per lap.

They're not doing themselves any favours, looks more like face saving and smoke screen to the casual observer.

They've been dining out on their own "reserves" in calculation of start weight it would seem. More so, that initial part drained bang on the money kg figure! starts to look suspicious.

10kg ~ 3 tenths is the usual rule. So 3/10s per kg or 30 hundredths seems correct.

I mean it's a PR saving piece after all and Merc are good at that.

If that's definitely there in their calculations, then they were not projecting any tyre to have that much wear. That's certainly a risky position to take.
Only they can now say if that's acceptable to them in finishing this race, and then loosing it in so public an event and news feed fodder.

Doesn't look like a good position in promoting MB ethos, does it ?

But I also dont understand the 2020 finish of LH in that situation.

We don't know how much of the tyre was left then (Silverstone puncture finish / win ?) Or there may have been an allowed substitute set given in that case, or singular to facilitate weighing.

Or why didn't Alonso get DSQ since he was running a 1 stop. The tire loss narrative doesn't make sense to me. Teams go long on tires all the time over a season, year after year and we've never had a light car because of tire loss

Casual observers really aren't paying any attention to it any more...
If I come across as blunt, I apologise, it's my ASD. Sometimes, like an F1 car aqua-planing, it gets out of my control.

he clearly doesnt, he said things like the tyres, pointing at the plank wear, then lists pretty much every thing whilst saying they still dont understand yet.

Its a face saving PR release, that says they still dont have a clue / pointing at plank wear ( how much weight can you lose from the plank with out going over the 1 mm limit any 1? )

Rumor is that he was denied at the RB breakfast buffet for budget cap reasons.
