Very lucky that didn’t dig into the gravel and roll.

Dohh this is really strange, does this car has front-rear brake balance setting that the driver can alter? In bracking the rear end unloaded fully and the rest is history.
Edit: my mistake, he wasn't bracking ..

There has to have been some kind of failure with the car, because those steering inputs are insane otherwise. Like putting it into a spin on purpose. Nose didn't dip as if heavy braking, either

Probably an issue with the brakes so he dumped speed by initiating the spin

That looked to me like he was going to show off with a drift and got it wrong. No mechanical issues.

Spitballing on the safety car incident, because why not. Here's my theories:

1) The way the car seems to wobble seems like it's very possible there was a puncture, although there doesn't seem to be a dramatic blowout so either it was a slow leak that got too low or we just didn't see it? Moderately likely imo.

2) I'm assuming the Vantage has BBW and so there's no direct feedback from the brakes fading; is it possible the revamped Monza layout w/ higher speeds (new pavement + lower kerbs for higher corner speeds) coupled with any changes on the Vantage road car (think it was recently facelifted, no?) mean that after a few hot laps the brakes were cooked and this wasn't discovered until the pedal just went to the floor and the spin was an attempt to dissipate energy? Would explain the lack of braking nose dive and erratic steering. Seems most likely to me.

3) Maylander was trying to pull off a sick drift around Parabolica 8) and it didn't go to plan. Plausible but no chance we'll know about it unless he gets fired.

Side note: apparently the Aston is 5 seconds a lap slower than when they use the Mercedes.

I wonder if the new pavement and kerbs might make the track more medium speed than before; surely the Lesmos, Parabolica, and Ascari will be at least 5th (maybe even 6th?) gear corners now, no? I wonder if this might reward slightly higher downforce setups compared to the previous layout. I can also see it going the other way with the increased mechanical grip from the new pavement allowing teams to run tea trays for wings. I'm interested to see which way is better. Probably extreme thermal deg from low DF setups if the track is super hot.
