2025 prototype tyres and new C6 compound will be tested at the Mexico GP
The second practice session will be extended from 60 to 90 minutes, primarily to try out prototypes of the C4 and C5 compounds. Pirelli has also announced that it will be bringing a few sets of C6 tires. For the engineers and drivers, such tests during a GP weekend are always somewhat tricky. When doing setup work and testing technical upgrades, you have to be careful not to be misled by the different types of tires.
According to the regulations, the development of the tire construction had to be completed by the homologation deadline on September 1. The engineers now have until the end of the season to finalize the individual rubber compounds. At the tests in Abu Dhabi after the last race of the year, the drivers will then be able to strap on the finished product for the first time.
The biggest change for drivers, engineers and fans is the introduction of a sixth tire type. Until now, the compounds were only numbered from C1 to C5, but an extra-soft C6 rubber will be added in 2025. By extending the scale downwards, Pirelli wants to respond to the ever-increasing number of city circuits on which softer compounds should provide better grip.
