Was there any explanation for why the team went to the soft tires so early in the practice session?

From my memory, this is not that unusual for Red Bull. They often times are out of sync with other teams. I wouldn't read into it much.

I think it was more than out of sync. Other teams went in and out from the pit doing multiple stints on hard tyres, only putting softs for the last 10 minutes or so.
Red Bull just did 1 stint on hard, then went to the pit for 10-15 minutes and came out on softs for the rest of the session.

Yes, different program. But as I said, it is not the first time they did it. I know it because I am a McLaren fan and I am always trying to gauge the pace compared to Red Bull. So I notice when Max goes out on softs much earlier because laptimes are not as comparable.

I can say as a McLaren fan that you shouldn't read into it too much. They just think this is better use of their time.

Max seems to be very conservative in the last few corners, staying well away from any potential track limits, doing well though given it’s not on the edge

Yeah hope so. tbh it seems nearly everyone messed up SQ3 apart from rus and ver. Hamilton was 3,5 tenths up on Rus in S1 alone before ruining the lap.
