After FP1 & FP2 we look in decent shape for this weekend, I hope it stays that way all the way trough :)

I'm trying to remember the reasons, and think it's just about when they can close the road down. And it's then better to be coming back after a late Saturday into Sunday over Sunday into Monday.

( I still think it's mad) but, sometimes mad is good in small doses.
It's Saturday night, rather than Sunday, in Vegas because if they did Sunday night then it would be Monday morning for the majority of the world....where the majority of fans lives.

I'm sure I read somewhere as well that they also felt more Americans would watch on a Saturday night.
It is just about the worst possible start time if they want Americans to watch. The race starts at 10 pm on the west coast but at midnight in the central time zone and 1 am for the east coast.

I'm not staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning to watch the race. I'll watch it on my DVR the next morning.
Can't disagree with regards to the time for Americans, I was meaning Saturday vs Sunday.
If I come across as blunt, I apologise, it's my ASD. Sometimes, like an F1 car aqua-planing, it gets out of my control.

decent ? Mclaren look in the best shape.. the drivers were not punishing the car like the Ferrari's and Mercs were. Redbull is not even in the picture, that frankenstein rear wing (instead of an actual lowDF wing) is their Achilles heel.

I had only a sporadic view so hard to tell but the car didn't look draggy. They were one of quickest in the last sector so that's good.

I didn't really follow the sessions, because I thought sleeping was a better use of that time

However, RedBull seems really slow. No idea what happened, but even when you consider how conservative they usually run on practice sessions, I don't think the straight line deficit can be fixed with engine modes alone.

Red Bull made a mistake with the choice of rear wing, and are losing up to 7 km/h on the straights relative to their rivals.

Dr. Helmut Marko said that they need another wing, which is not in place. It is not yet certain that it will be delivered in time for tomorrow's qualifying.

CHAMPIONSHIP INTRIGUE ALIVE AGAIN :)

According to FDataAnalysis Verstappen: 'We have no grip' yet his grip was not terrible (0.43s slower than NOR in S2 but on Mediums); instead, his engine was turned way down! RedBull's bad straight-line performance is mostly due to the engine, as they start losing speed very early on the straight (where drag matters little)

#LasVegasGP TAKEAWAYS
-McL's aero efficiency looks great
-Ferrari and Mercedes have better braking

1)SECTORS
-Mercedes quickest in the diverse S1. Ferrari struggled
-NOR was quickest by a margin in S2 (high downforce needed)
-SAI fastest in S3 thanks to a tow. Yet LEC was not far. RBR lost massively there (low power)

2)TOP SPEEDS
Ferrari's top speed without the tow was 345km/h. McL was not only the fastest in the twisty S2, but their top speed was great, too!

3)GRIP (g-g)
Ferrari and Mercedes have superior braking; McL reached lower accelerations but maintained them for longer

McL and Mercedes look good, and Ferrari should join them if they get the setup right. RBR seems more distant

However, I found another post saying RB choose the wrong RW for this GP. Interesting. So to have only McLaren vs Ferrari in the battle for WCC? Although RB with Perez was anyway like one man with a tight hand :)

Verstappen did set a S2 on Softs, though: 31.723s, compared to Norris' 31.287s. And Norris was about to significantly improve his time, before he missed the breaking point in turn 12 (?).

So although Verstappen is for sure not going to finish 17th again tomorrow, I don't think there really is much positive to see in his performance, no matter the engine mode used.

Maybe is both for them: engine and RW. I am happy that McLaren is not in this position and we can fight Mercedes and, specially, Ferrari on Sunday's race (Sunday for us in Europe :D )

Yeah, that's a car not trying to go fast.

Not sure where RB will be, but they will be much faster.

What's more telling is Mclarens better apex speed at this point. To some degree that will be resolved though.

Our time was set on sorts at a later time, vs mediums for Max.

I wouldn't make too much of this gap. It can be explained in an instant by a car struggling to get the harder compound heated up.

Norris and Verstappen were both out at the same time, trying to set a (second) lap on Softs. Norris had to abort it due to a mistake towards the end of S2, Verstappen couldn't finish it because of the red flag. Before the mistake, Norris was more than 1s faster, with Red Bull's weakest part of the lap still to come.

Do you have lap numbers? Can't see that anywhere.
