there's no way RB are 1.2s a lap slower on race pace.
They achieved this at various points in Australia and China. It's no longer out of the question.

Hard to take anything away from FP2 except that the McLarens are rapid. Lando even backed off on his last lap because he doesn't like the pressure of being top.

At the end of stints not in the beginning and I think the mediums on RB were pretty new, so yeah, I don't think it's a 1:1 comparison, we'll see when F1tempo processes data and we can compare their long runs.

there isn't really much available from FP2, unfortunately:

Verstappen's 2nd lap was another couple of tenths slower (before the red flag).

Guys forget about the papayas, they are out of reach. It'll be a podium fighting season.

Here's the telemetry, similar performance engine and fuel modes, Lando's fastest lap is lap 5 so slightly lower fuel. Max 0.150-0.200 off before the final chicane mistake.

Lando's 2nd lap also there for a more representative comparison, Max's 2nd lap was slower partly due to the mistake coming out of the last corner and a slower middle sector but not much to go off on but it doesn't look like Max is 1s off, should be the usual 0.2-0.3 before deg kicks in.

40% chance of raining in the race. It's the best chance.

At this point, too common of a trend this season. Clearly, Mercedes are better at this point from George's times. They are barely a tenth or two off McLaren. I wouldn't rule out a Russell WDC this year since Mercedes can actually develop well in season like they could the last few years.

Max can maybe fight for a podium at best but that's about it, and even then that assumes George underperforms a bit.

Ferrari is an unknown for me because I really don't know how quick they are when they run their car legally over a race distance. They seem to have more performance than Red Bull but maybe their setups don't allow them to extract it or whatever.

I think dirty air is substantially high this year. The only way I see Max winning before the upgrades is if he can qualify on pole (which requires about three to four drivers to make a mess of their laps in Q3) and then he can somehow keep them behind for as long as he can try.

I personally don't think Red Bull will fight for wins on merit at least not until Spain where something actually goes wrong for McLaren (again big big doubt). Fighting for podiums every race on merit would already be an achievement as even that is not given right now.

This RB can't even gain in the esses. At least the RB of last year was competitive with McLaren in S1 till Lando messed up his last Q3 lap. Oh well, anyways.

Season over, we won 4 in the row. Its the same as 2010-2013 and 2021-2024, that fifth year we have no chance. Max and Yuki cant fight with that car, Mclaren is just dominant its not even close. We might fight for a podium yes, but lets wait until Spain. If we are not faster after that race, then I will just enjoy the races until the end. Its reality for now.

I took it from here, but looks like Autoracer misinterpreted what Verstappen said. I don't think Verstappen was referring to the new parts specifically when he said they were trying "different things" on the car and that it "didn't work" - to me that sounds like they were trying different setup windows

It was only 1 minor update and 2 track specific cooling changes. Don't think that update would change balance or speed in any meaningful way.
