Cool shot!
I guess they would revert to the previous design at colder GPs.

It's possible the air over the engine cover behaves like a wall at high speeds and add some back pressure, and making it difficult to entrain the hot air. Staggering the gills like that create more low pressure regions so the flow over the engine cover can drive out the hot air better.

Wont be surprised if Mclaren and other teams adopt this loop hole.
For Sure!!

I think the gurneys increase the swirl from the inside area under the wing. I have to check it out. but It's hard to see what benefits they have, ignoring the passing thing. :-k

edit: the gurney does not increase the wake considerably. It serves another purpose, it increases the pressure on the endplate surfaces and region of air a little behind the endplate. It looks like Diesel has a valid point, it may have a noticable effect in yaw condtions. It was hard for me to decipher if it strengthens the vortices at the endplate's upper edge (the curved slits in the end plates serve this purpose already) or if it puts more swirl on the air passing under the area bound by end plates and wing.

In agreement with Diesel, I am going to elaborate a bit and say: in yaw condition the gurney increases effective area on the end-plate (an end plate for an end plate) and mitigates spillage of air across the end-plate over into the up-wash of the wing.
I would say they cause low pressure under backside of the wing, augmenting the wing and diffusor.

Usually, when do teams fit their race engines in cars? Is it after FP2? I'm asking this because ferrari after their unscheduled engine change in Bahrain they kept a low profile on Melbourne and now Sepang free practice time sheets. I'm guessing they're running Bahrain problematic units someway short on power to keep them realiable and this way they can minmize damage throw season.

I think they are playing dirty with the gurneys on the wing end plates. Not bashing the team but i find it suspicious the vertical sides of the endplates have gurneys on them.

Just a thought.

This is an image of the 2008 Mclaren at 2010 Oz gp Speed challenge...note that gurneys are all over the endplate..

I bet they were rev limited with those Bahrain lumps they ran in FP
They could be caught out in quali. Webber missed most of FP2 due to an engine failer

Nice score for Alonso: 3 races - 2 engines, 1 gearbox, 7 points more than Kubica.
