Force India VJM03 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Yes the nose-cone is a homologated part in 2010... that's why I'm surprised to see the FI with a deeply modified nose wich dropped it's 'Bernoulli' hump...

That nose has already changed at last two times before the season begins:

I didnt think it was homologated but just required a crash test everytime a new design was made meaning it was more effort for the teams to get it onto the car.

No doubt i'll be proved wrong.

I think only the tub is homologated,and the nose cone may not be a part of it.And also the nose cone they used in Bahrain and Australia were different.

Minor changes (around the wing fasteners) were applied (also by Mercedes) since the beginning of the season but these kind of changes are permitted...

28.7
a) One specification of each of the following parts must be homologated prior to the first Event of the Championship season :
- survival cell ;
- principal and second roll structures ;
- front, rear and side impact structures ;
- front wheel ;
- rear wheel.
Once homologated, changes to the these parts will only be permitted for clear safety or reliability reasons following written approval from the FIA.

Perhaps the outer skin of the nose is NOT the crash structure. If you have a crash structure homologated, then add aerodynamic control surfaces OVER it as an independant part, then you can develop the nose aerodynamics and leave the crash structure alone.

If the outer skin is made from a composite much more compliant and weaker than the crash structure, then it wont affect the performance of the crash structure.

The nosebox is a homologated item (front crash structure), and cannot be changed during the season. However, what you can do is add non-structural fairings to the nose which is what FI and other teams have done this season.

There you go. =D> Well said.
Yes a similar argument was in the W01 thread. The crash structure could a simplified cone with the aero skin over it. Similar to last year, Renault seemed to have a styrofoam tip on the chin of the nose.

I'd like to believe little lumps and surfaces can be plonked onto the nose, and not be in breach of regulations. Hopefully we will see more of this further down in the season.
For Sure!!

The reason for Mark Smith and others to move was that the Lotus pays double the Force India salary.
