Mclaren Mercedes MP4-25

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Driver confidence would make up the speed difference more often than not, but it looks like they've forgotten that philosophy with this years car.
That's not possible considering the car would've been almost completely designed by the time he got there.

I'm afraid it might be a very real possibility that the Red Bull will completely walk away next year with the end of the DD, and McLaren might struggle because of the characteristics we've seen of the RB5 and RB6, and what we're discussing here of the MPR25.

Back to the car discussion-

Once again the performance of both drivers with heavy fuel was right there with the Red-Bulls. And once again, as the fuel burnt off, with the diffuser being less effective because of less weight, the Red Bulls went off into the distance.

When or if they solve the ride height sensitivity is when the car will truly be on the pace.

is it ride height ,or the higher vertical force or the shift in weight distribution that is costing them?

Or is is it RedBull with the better weight distribution or aero config for low fuelloads ??? this would of course explain their superiority in Q and when on lower fuel settings.

Obviously Macs is even with full tank , and has no disadvantage with tyre degradation on the softs compared to rb on full tank.

I didn't see that, got any more info on it?
Sadly not. Just something I've read in a couple of places.

Apparently Whitmarsh has revealed that a version of the F Duct was run on one of the McLarens at Monaco 2009. Does anyone have a link to a gallery of images from that weekend, so we can have a look?

Are you sure? I've just looked up the official video of the 2009 Monaco GP, and I don't see a shark fin on either of the McLarens...

Apparently Mclaren introduced an "unswitched" version to Monaco, so it wasn't driver controlled like the current one, and instead would work passively at a given speed. Here's the link:

Hence there was no duct on the nose or shark fin to channel the air to the rear wing via the driver.

If I remember correctly it just looked like their usual rear wing last year, except with a hole in the middle of it. This would have been the intake and vented through a slot, stalling the wing at a given speed. Strangely, at the time I thought it was just to reenergize the flow and prevent the wing from stalling due to the steep angle of attack required at Monaco.

Here's some photos from that weekend:

I remember Whitmarsh commenting that "ours has a hole in it" when queried about copying the rear wing top hole design thingy at the time. I remember thinking at the time that maybe air was going through the wing in a novel way but never saw anything to suggest it was that clever.

Presumably it was tuned to dump air through the wing slot at a given pressure difference between the upper and lower surfaces. It would thus be self limiting with speed.
