That's banned for 2011.

Yes flywheels are banned for 2011.

Though rumors are saying that McLaren are developing a electro/hydraulic hybrid KERS system.

why are flywheels banned? Is the Williams one with Porsche/Audi/VW support too good?

Now im actually a bit in doubt whether if its banned or not.

Williams are have ditched the flywheel KERS and are going for the battery KERS for packaging reasons.

So im now in doubt if its just Williams who have ditched the flywheel or if it is actually illigal???

Wouldn't a flywheel upset the balance too much? I'd say the 26 will have an updated version of the 24's system. It kicked ass in 2009

Thoughts?
Just looks like a library picture of a flybrid system. If Williams, who are right on it with flywheel say they cant package it for F1 then I doubt any other teams will manage it.

I agree that it will be very unlikely that Flywheel KERS could be packaged for 2011 even if allowed.
IMO it would be far to heavy as a hydraulic system for the single axle application for 2011. Much easier (more effective) if used mechanicaly or electricaly.
I would go for electric, without the losses and control complexity of a toloroidal drive.
For the AWD KERS being considered for 2013, this is a different matter all together.
Unfortuantely as usual in F1, innovative design will be held back again by regulations and ideas now are of little value.

What makes you think it's flywheel?

I think it's rather unlikely that McLaren will use it in 26.

McLaren have signed up to use the Merc KERS system. There isn't really anywhere else to take that discussion...

Only to ask how Merc can justify six million Euros bills to any teams using its system. That of course is a blatant rip off.

It has the Flybrid logo on it, so pretty straightforwardly a Williams unit.

Looks to be the 'Flybrid' system. Strange thing for ATM_andy to post if it had no meaning. Scarbs referenced on his twitter also...

Maybe he's hinting that they're planning to use a Flywheel system...could also mean absolutely nothing and he's just taking the p**s!! Merry Christmas everyone!!!

Flywheel KERS is banned I thought, Electrical only for this year. But I'm not too sure.

I'm pretty sure ATM-Andy is legitimately Andy Latham.
