Virgin MVR-02 Cosworth

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

The HRT looks even more like the GP2 though.

I just dont get why Virgins car looks so conservative and plain?
They are only using CFD to develop their design and that should make it alot easier to test unconventional daring designs.

So i wonder why they havent gone more radical ways in their design.

Simples. If they do go radical and the track testing doesnt reflect CFD results, then they have no other means of testing because they have no windtunnel... they only have CFD nad on track testing.

They will simply use these cars to refine their code and hopefully get more accurate models year on year to the point where they can get quite radical.

I think we can liken it to T9 writing on some mobile phones. You start off with something utterly useless and uninteresting, but with time you start to understand it and gradually improve it, until you've got the hang of it and you do wonders with it.

Yes nice spot :) The right rear tyre should have been on the left side :)

But if Virgin wants to collect alot of data before they can do radical designs why arent they running large pitot arrays like McLaren???

Probably has to do with (lack of) money...

I don't think the price of the hardware that much of an issue is, it would be more about manpower.
First you need to define the location of the sensors (not necessarily that straightforward), then have someone designing the arrays, fixtures, finding a place for the acq. system etc., then you need to postprocess/analyse the results.
That quickly adds up to a few weeks (at least) of full time work for 1 guy, something they probably cannot afford.

Given they don't employ any experimentalists, I doubt they would know what to do with the data.

Every design is a compromise between the resources you have available at thetime the car is being designed and the materials and assets you have at your disposal to manufacture the parts.
McLaren, Ferrari, red Bull, Mercedes, even Torro Rosso have all invested more in infrastructure and hence are able to produce more refined articles.
Virgin will get there, lets not forget this is their 2nd season in F1 and even Torro Rosso (ex Minardi) has been around for 20yrs already.
