HRT F111 Cosworth

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Those endplates still bother me... who decided presenting airflow with a perpendicular surface was a good idea?

They produce a low pressure zone behind them, which helps drive the under wing flow around the tyre.

It's the same the reason why BMW Sauber ran with rather large flat planes on top of their endplates in 2009 but in a different axis. The wheel rotation induced a high pressure above the surface resulting in a lower pressure below, and downforce.

Yes but big drag penalty and it didn't do sauber much good, there are better ways to get downforce.

Willis confirming they are in afct using the 2010 tub design only adapted to the more severe impact testing .

He also cited the main work was the rear end of the car .Design started 15th of December!

I find it very shocking to see a guy like Willis saying the team is stiull developing a structure and proceedures...Hasn´t Willis been famous for this in BAR and REDBULL? I would expect he knows exactly how you manage this and just implement the proceedures and then start staffing up to get all things done in time...but as he talks it seems to be more a work in progress approach and more like a fire drill approach..surprising.

Crude way of generating downforce, but seems to be working.

Id recon there will be another small update of this car remaining, but enough for a 0.2 of a second increase in pace.

Id recon the F112 is in full development now. Willis said there will be an announcement soon of what Hispania will do for 2012 in terms of resources and such. Personally i can see this team being relocated to a Spanish facility in its entirety with alot of new faces. Id recon a deal with Epsilon is on the offing with the new Hispania owners. HRT Epsilon-Cosworth anyone???

HRT is working on the 2012 challenger since June but as the HEAD of aero is doubling up as race engineer the programme is not progressingas quickly as you´d hope.Willis claims the first chassis should be ready end of September ...thats not to far away.. I´d say the designs for the tub must be finalised already now as you need to build moulds and layup / assemply of the tub is quite time consuming they cannot dwell on with the design forever...Especially when you need to homologate the chassis BEFORE testing for the first time ...

Is this the first time HRT has run the shallower rear wing? This will be the first year HRT goes to Monza with a non-Monaco rear wing!! 8)

HRT has pulled themselves out of suck and into basic respectability. Next year they will have to do better and it will get harder. I think Lotus/Caterham is going through that phase this year, and they are a bit underwhelming.

HRT ran a low profile rear wing in Canada. Geoff Willis was on BBC sports extra during FP2 and provided some intersting insight into the operational side.
One thing I found interesting is that in damp conditions there is a critical level of downforce needed before switching to slicks. The front running teams can make that switch much earlier because of greater aero load.
Development is concentrated on improving efficient downforce so work is based on front wing, undertray and diffuser development.
The most dissapointing aspect is that there are no plans to run KERS next year. Performance wise that guarantees they will be at the back and risk loosing touch with their main competitors.

Wish they would just buy the Williams system and be done with it. After such a disastrous Williams will want to find buyers for it's older stuff. Would be a perfect fit.

:? They haven't actually been in touch yet, so they have nothing to risk losing.

Not running KERS in 2011 or 2012, is the same reasoning as Virgin & Team Lotus.
Until they're 0.3-0.4sec off their rivals, the time & money spent on integrating KERS is better spent on catching up the 2-3sec they currently lack.

When asked about relocating Willis in the BBC tried to not answer the question, I believe Spain and Epsilon is going to be the best option.

Good news that development is in full flow though, F112 should be such a better car.
