Ferrari F2012

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

OH MY GOD, look at all those ellipses! This car is a winner already!
can you explain to an engineering challenged person what the ellipses are and how it works

Probably a tyre pressure and temperature monitor. They connect wirelessly to a receiver in the the vehicle.
Not the engineer at Force India

First of all: the image has been made by effe 1 tech:

Ferrari's designed F2012 cockpit according to Alonso's preferences and you can see the difference between Massa's drive position and Alonso's one. Spanish driver prefers keeping the arms not stretched to the "maximum".

I disagree with the hole ugly f1 car thing, I don't think there is such thing. Mainly because I'm a big supporter of the form-follows-function school of design. I find things that have been designed and engineered to such a high level of precision and attention to detail amazing! Nothing on an F1 car is on it to look good (apart from the paint job), and as a result I think every single one looks amazing. Also, based on no technical knowledge at all haha; I would say this car will beat MCL and take the fight to RBR.

Form does follow function, but when function is restricted by regulations oddly (Weird way to restrict the height of the chassis), then form is ruined.

to move the mechanics of the suspension lower in the tub they have to displace something. In this case the drivers legs are higher because the pedal box will have to be raised.
If the driver is seated higher that will also result in a higher CoG since we're talking about raising around 68Kg a few centimetre
If this graphic is anything to go by. it appears, that most of the suspension components are mounted "in front" of the pedal box anyway, so I don´t think, that a repositioning of the driver feet (higher) is strictly necessary, when moving to a pull rod layout at the front.

Maybe also worth to note, that some overhead comparisons suggests, that the front axle, has been moved forward on the 2012 car, - maybe one reason is to have "enough room" in front of the pedal box.

Just wondering, how are Ferrari allowed those huge turning vanes under the nose? I thought bodywork in this area was no longer allowed?

Charlie Whiting is seemingly going to Jerez next week and having a poke arround the cars himself. He will be the final judge.

I suspect this is why the teams have got massivly long wing pillars and, in the case of McLaren a snow plough.

I'm surprised Ferrari went with the cooling inlet behind the airbox from the MP4-26 when all last year, we heard McLaren complain about having difficulties getting clean, reliable airflow there for consistent cooling. McLaren disliked the concept enough to go away from it this year, so we'll see how Ferrari fairs.

I believe they are. Force India had them as well.

Global crisis seam to have hit even the big players. That's 2011 chassis, that is why nose is so ridiculously Lego. Same goes for Force India. Each car you see with such nose, be sure that it is just new regs nose on 2011 chassis. Mclaren has hit the jackpot by lowering their chassis and nose last year.

Your sources must have been mistaken. That only applies 250mm from the centre line. Ferraris wings are within the 250mm from the centre line.

He was referring to page 13 where someone said they were illegal.

Nice bum as it is, it does make me think the should've banned rear wings and kept DDDs - that would look stunning!
