There is a guy on the Toyota forum who seems to have additional info on the team and posts regular updates. This was his last one...

Ricardo was very quick at Barcelona testing. He had a new feature on his car. It is more or less mass that is connected to the wheel supports and that is able to move. Renault and McLaren are believed to run similar constructions. For RZ with the system he was 1 sec quicker... It is in fact weight or mass that moves when driving corners and is close to the edge of the regulations. Results were that good that the team wanted to run it even at Silverstone but that is nearly impossible. Engine spec upgrade will be there for for Hockenheim.

Increasing unsprung mass?


I dunno if they'd want to do that. It used to be the holy grail in F1 - minimise the unspring mass.

I agree, sounds like it breaks the rules of physics Unless it is a simplified layman's explanation.

It could be a mass that moves towards the inside wheel to work it a bit harder.

Toyota have found a second per lap within the rules. In other news, Scuderia_Russ has won the Lottery. As for unsprung mass... surely this is desired in any wheeled application, not just F1.

They must be talking about the mass dampers that have come up in a different thread. The damper sits in the nose and reduces the resonance of the wheel bouncing over kerbs etc.

This sounds very much like movable ballast and I was under the impression that movable ballast is illegal

I'm also under impression that it is movable ballast but it might not be illegal if they've for example atteched piece of heavy material (not THE ballast) to steering system in a way that it moves right when car is turning right and left when car is turning left (in the front end of the chassis). Power steering could do that easily but I don't get how moving several kilogramms of ballast several centimeters (probably less than 10) can give you 1 second per lap.

I thought of that as well, a sort of reverse steering rack. Just can't see how they would get it past Charley Whiting

G.Piola drawings were published last week in several magazines about that. It was discovered as the nose of Renault cars seemed to be very heavy to carry and there's a sheet to hide what's inside

So what do you think about the apparent 1 second per lap system Toyota apparently have? A load of crap?

The system on the Renault surely doesn't account for 1 second per lap...
