Williams FW34 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

An attempt to control tyre squirt?

In the Caterham thread, they had debuted a humongous exhaust cannon (basically a larger exit than the Red Bulls).

Considering that the FW34 has such an incredible drop off with the low gearbox, wouldn't it behoove them to have a similar exit out their engine cover? It might even smooth out the taper that they currently have (which isn't so much a taper than a pointed cylinder). Considering the volume and speed of the flow through the radiators, getting it wide across the beam wing would be ideal.

Nah, the smaller scale* turbulence kills the wing's ability to generate downforce.

*It'd be more medium scale coming from that monstrosity!
I figured as much in Caterham's case. I'll have to go back through the RB7 thread to read up about that cannon exhaust, since their's was often times pretty wide as well.

I wonder if Williams will try to change up where the radiator exhaust will exit? At the moment, it is blowing through the suspension much like most of the other teams. With that hobbit of a gearbox, there must be other potential change to the body work other than decreasing the volume down like that, though I can imagine it provides a pretty solid flow of air to the rear/beam wing.

Anyway, they had some issues today. Let's hope for a better one tomorrow, along with seeing what other new parts for Australia they have up their sleeve.

It appears low-speed handling is a major design point for the new car (apologies if a repeated post);

It may explain the rounded end, trying to allow as much air flow as possible for low-speed corners.

And one where you can see cooling openings by lower side of rear engine cover.

Little cooling exits (currently closed) in the front edge of the sidepods. I wonder why they gave up on the barrel exit they used last year. Liking the swirly top element on the FW.

Great photos guys, especially the combined overhead and rear view. I guess the position of the heat sensitive stickers shows the flow of the exhaust?

Yesterday wasn't fantastic and today doesn't seem to have gotten off to the best start. Let's hope things can improve!

Following several reports to the mods I've done a tidy up:

Wind tunnel & CFD  viewtopic.php?f=6&t=9868&view=unread#unread

As a pre-emptive note - Testing chatter belongs in the testing thread. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12073&view=unread#unread

If your comment isn't about an object that is on this car then it doesn't belong in this thread!

richard_leeds, what you have done makes no sense in the other threads

Dont you think this belongs here rather than the Correlation between CFD and wind tunnel results?
