COTA Austin - construction and infrastructure

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

What do you think of the prospect of a USGP 2012 at Austin Texas

Good thinking. Place has good infra structure and nice climate in winter.

Not good as it has no motor sport tradition in the US.

It's everything else that has me concerned. The track will be done but the race will be, dare I say it? Half Assed and poorly xecuted.
We'll see. I don't doubt that there will be a few things missing, a few things wrong, a few things unfinished, and probably even a few things that would have been done right or better if Tavo had stayed with the project.

And I'm sure we'll hear about them all in detail. Outside of the Ferrari garage, no one whines more in F1 than the press corps, so we'll hear. And I'm sure one or two of them will try to channel Jeremy Clarkson and shoot off a doozy lambasting the race, Austin, Texas and the US in general. We'll be well informed of the track's shortcomings, I've no doubt.

But I've yet to see anything that resembles a disaster in the making. The USF1 equivalent here would be them showing us pictures of three guys in hardhats, a backhoe, some half-finished architectural plans, and a sample bleacher seat they made. And maybe later some photos of a contractor that they're sure to hire any day now once the money comes through, staring worryingly at said bleacher seat.

If you ask me, this project was unrealistic to begin with, there's going to be neither track nor race in this lifetime.

MrE is the one with the crystal ball, hence Soprano GP, he couldn't care less for Epstein or McCombs.

You'd better hope so. I seem to remember some Nomex being on your menu if it does.

Somehow, I'm not losing any sleep over the prospect of that diet. My prediction is that they are banking on incoming PSL-funds to complete the track, moneys which will be slim pickings, why construction work will stop sometime in early June and that's it.

If you buy tickets for this race then you're not going to see a race or get your money back. There's no way I'd be doing it. This has "Run off to the Caymans with all any money" written all over it.

Given the extent of the construction so far I've no doubt the track itself will in fact be completed. I just don't know if it will be this year. :\

I doubt that the track's construction depends on the $20 to $30 million max they could ever get from PSLs.

Yes, billionaire Red McCombs is going to skip town with your $200. Just because.

...
I'd be surprised if they didn't plan on earning more money than that from the PSL ticket sales?

As I recall, if you buy the ticket on a Visa card then you'll get your money back if the race is cancelled.

Covered by Visa then or how would it work in practice, money locked in until the event is underway?

For all we know there could be only $20m real equity out of a $182m balance in this project. So there is a very real possibility that the creditors will end up holding an empty bag regardless of Red McCombs personal fortune.

Sure, but if his goal is to swindle the investor's money, it's unlikely that he would first spend all the money building a race track before he skips town.

If it's his money being wasted and if he's got a vague idea about F1 that is, my serious doubts on both counts.

+1 Agree with that. The guy who is more likely to scam and scoot IMO is Epstein.
