Wow!

Im no Fan of Schumacher, but how does he not qualify as a legend?
Because legend means "A traditional story sometimes popularly regarded as historical but unauthenticated."

His TC was legendary :)

I can't believe it but Hill just changed his view again. This is the second U-turn in three weeks. The man is spineless as a ventriloquist puppet.

This whole episode leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. Not only Bernie but the head of the FiA, McLaren, parts of the press and some ex WDCs are in the al Khalifas pockets. Disgusting!!

+1

Bernie probably won't even be there. What does he care if somebody dies or gets injured? The other guys will have top security. It's the rest who will really be in danger.

Only the very biggest of [insert gentle plural pejorative here] would look at a dynamic, if not flat-out revolutionary, situation and maintain a singular state of mind one way or the other. This is exponentially more true of commentary that does not originate from the source. Even a basic, kindergarten-level study of history shows that world events are not always as they appear.

And worst of all is that it's frighteningly hypocritical. How can one have an autocratic view of a situation in which autocracy itself is the "villain"?

Seeing as you have your avatar as Ayrton Senna...Senna might still be alive if Schumacher wasn't driving an illegal car that Senna couldn't get away from.

Per the Bahrain situation, I think F1 has no choice but to race there. I'm not a fan of them racing, but given the amount of Middle Eastern money involved in the sport now, it makes it sort of difficult to make any real decision. Everyone has been waffling back and forth with a number of varied statements altogether.

I personally do not want the race to even take place, but I also realize it isn't a realistic expectation given the external pressures on F1 as a whole. A shame...would love to see teams pull out of the race though.

I personally do think Senna might've lived to see another day had benetton/flavio/schumacher not cheated. We can never know for sure, but when you look at flavio's 'other' exploits, it doesn't seem all that far fetched, not to mention the smoke and the fire about the subject.

But we digress. How I just posted something about schumi flavio and cheating under this topic I've no idea whatsoever.

I've mixed feelings about the situation in Bahrain or whether the race should take place or not. Some are saying "human rights violations, moral high-ground etc." Well how about this; if we're going to start talking about human rights violations, F1 itself is one. All that money being spent in a retarded way just to make air flow over race cars better should be going towards making the world a beter place. Some will actually argue money spent on F1 is making the world a better place. I'll duly disagree. F1 is just a pastime for me, let's keep it that way. If the circus is not going there, it should be for the right reason, and it's security. What goes on in Bahrain is their concern, and their concern alone. If there was a similar situation in where you lived (god forbid -not that I necessarily believe in him- that's just what they say), would you like it if some other country poked their nose in your business ? I think not.

I'm far from a Schumacher apologist, but this sort of blame game is a very dangerous one to play.

Sure, you can. Honoring a pre-existing contract is perhaps the least political option of all. Otherwise, not going is just as much of a political statement as going. It's a classic Catch-22...
I'm not surprised that I have once again to disagree here. The politicising did not start with the race contract some years ago. That was entirely separate at the time from the political situation in Bahrain.

But last year they had a bloody beat down of political demonstrations by Saudi tanks which was in effect a pro monarchy coup by a foreign military power. The political movement for democracy and civil rights that was attacked by the coup is ongoing. But now the monarchy claims that F1 is visiting a nation which is unified once again. It is a blatantly obvious political propaganda lie. F1 is being used for a political demonstration exactly like the podium ceremony in Turkey 2006 or the Berlin Olympic Games 1936.

If F1 would refuse to go it would be true to it's own statutes because that would deny the Bahrain royals turning the race into a propaganda affair. It is not true that cancelling the race would be a demonstration siding with the civil rights activists. The activists have not turned the race into a political show. That was the doing of the crown prince by dubbing it "uniF1cation". I believe that one has to be careful when one deals with propaganda issues. I believe the truth is clear when you just go back one year and analyse the history of the conflict in comparison with other propaganda events.

The similarity with Berlin 1936 becomes obvious when you compare Joseph Goebbel's slogan "The Olympic Games as a National task". Nothing could be more misappropriate. The games were supposed to be a huge international competition but Goebbels who was the chief organizer on the German side wanted to make them a demonstration of Arian and German superiority. Even the excessive use of police/military power is similar to the Bahrain events. In 1936 the SA and the SD had already evacuated all Sinti and Roma from the wider Berlin area and concentrated them in the Marzahn Ghetto. The concentration camp Sachsenhausen for Jews had already been erected and could have been visited by the visiting olympic athletes and their press. The freedom of press and speech had already been severely restricted.

The 1936 Olympic Games were a mistake. They should have never been awarded and should have been cancelled when the racial and religious discriminations in Germany were revealed. In 2006 The FiA did the right thing and punished the Turks for turning a podium ceremony into a political demonstration . This week they are making the same mistake as the free world in 1936. I fear it is because J.Todt is indebted to the crown prince for his role in the presidential elections. This is a very bad reason for making such a decision. A decision should be made with awareness of the history and in accordance with the statutes.
Whiteblue... do you know Jesse Owens?

Image

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesse_Owen ... n_Olympics
In 1936, Owens arrived in Berlin to compete for the United States in the Summer Olympics. Adolf Hitler was using the games to show the world a resurgent Nazi Germany. He and other government officials had high hopes that German athletes would dominate the games with victories (the German athletes achieved a "top of the table" medal haul). Meanwhile, Nazi propaganda promoted concepts of "Aryan racial superiority" and depicted ethnic Africans as inferior.

Owens surprised many by winning four gold medals: On August 3, 1936 he won the 100m sprint, defeating Ralph Metcalfe; on August 4, the long jump (later crediting friendly and helpful advice from Luz Long, the German competitor he ultimately defeated); on August 5, the 200m sprint; and, after he was added to the 4 x 100 m relay team, he won his fourth on August 9 (a performance not equaled until Carl Lewis won gold medals in the same events at the 1984 Summer Olympics).

Just before the competitions, Owens was visited in the Olympic village by Adi Dassler, the founder of the Adidas athletic shoe company. He persuaded Owens to use Adidas shoes, the first sponsorship for a male African-American athlete.
The long-jump victory is documented, along with many other 1936 events, in the 1938 film Olympia by Leni Riefenstahl.

On the first day, Hitler shook hands only with the German victors and then left the stadium. Olympic committee officials insisted Hitler greet every medalist or none at all. Hitler opted for the latter and skipped all further medal presentations.

On reports that Hitler had deliberately avoided acknowledging his victories, and had refused to shake his hand, Owens said at the time:
"Hitler had a certain time to come to the stadium and a certain time to leave". "It happened he had to leave before the victory ceremony after the 100 meters. But before he left I was on my way to a broadcast and passed near his box. He waved at me and I waved back. I think it was 'bad taste' to criticize the man of the hour in another country".
See If the Olympics were not held in Germany at that time peoples views especially the views of some Germans would not have been affected for the better. So sometimes good can come out of a bad situation.

I honestly dont think the race is a bad idea.

If not holding the race would actually achieve anything substantial, then okay I'd say the race shouldn't be held.

As it stands, in the grand scheme of things, not holding the race will only screw the Bahraini people even more as they are getting massive coverage from this alone.

If the race is not held this year, it probably wont be next year and they'll have to go and find another high profile venture to demonise for exposure, even if those they demonise have no real power to give them what they actually want.

Its all good the people voicing their concerns, but biting at people they want help from is hardly the way to go.

If anything, they could have made a more strategic move to do some silent politics with the F1 TV crews.

Now all they've done is create tension and winning against F1 in Bahrain would indeed be a win in their eyes, but in the long run they've won against the wrong people.

In all honesty, politics needs to stay WELL away from F1.

Otherwise, we'll soon have people complaining about the presenters using Apple products while foxconn chip factory workers in Asia are throwing themselves off the top of the factory buildings in (suicide) protest of their treatment.

If you're going to be that politically righteous, either be fully committed or dont bother.

I cant stand the half hearted bandwagon following that stems from media coverage more than it does from an actual genuine interest in "doing the right thing".

What has watching the race to do with it? There is no difference I can make to the reality by watching the race or not. F1 could have made a difference by blowing Al-Khalifa's propaganda away.

I have a deal with Sky to pay €10/race and it is paid in advance whether the race runs or not. So Bernie and the teams will get paid by me anyway. I do not get any adverts so I don't make a difference that way either.

But going by your previous posts wouldn't you say you are supporting Al Kalifa's desires by watching the race whether you want to or not?

He payed Bernie so people like you can see Bahrain holding an F1 race in all its glory.

I look on it from the bright side, instead.
