This isn't accurate. Yes we have known about part of the system since last year but had no idea it incorporated the rear wing. As the teams have said, they will have to spend lots of development time & money in copying this system. Last year it was presented as using on the front nose cone, so no the teams haven't had time to incorporate into their chassis. Same as making the ducting to go into the beam wing and the RW endplates. This is a rather large project that Mercedes has spent lots of time on.

I don't know that I agree that the system is useless, but saying it's not useless because they took the trouble to create it is nonsensical. I'm sure Red Bull and Ferrari both went to great lengths to design and implement their useless exhaust systems. That was definitely the case for Renault's front-exit exhaust.

Basing a judgment of worth on the vehement protestations of rivals is equally pointless. Protesting is easy; it requires only a word processor and a protest fee.

The only strong evidence one way or the other is Saturday's Q3 results. I think Rosberg had a Daffy Duct and Schumacher did not. I think it was a test, because it was the firs time this year a "normal" race was in the cards.

We'll know for sure in Bahrain. It's almost all stop/start, and that should play right into the hands of the Daffy Duct in qualifying. And I bet that both cars will have chassis scoops, thus both will have Daffy Ducts.

You seem to have a point there although you suggest that Mercedes had a similar level of complexity as Renault had with the exhaust. Perhaps they were designing something much simpler that can easily be computed with reasonable accuracy with a CFD system? The exhaust with it's thermal implications appears much more complex. McLaren initially also got it wrong.

Or they had an amplified and a non amplified system, as I have suggested before.

It will not be as simple as you make it. There could be different versions as I have explained.

Btw I think that "DDRS" is a much better expression than "Daffy Duct" which isn't defined anywhere.

No, I was addressing this fallacy.
WhiteBlue wrote:Merc have the system on the W03 and they would not have gone to a massive design effort if it were as useless as you say. Equally they would not have been attacked as vehemently if the system was useless.
Saying, in effect, "they built it, therefore it must work," is, frankly, just intellectual laziness, to borrow an expression from another member.

I know. That's called originality. I rather like it.

Besides, Daffy Duct has a nice ring to it. And given that the W03's nose is at least evocative of the famous cartoon character, I think I'm gon' stick with it, ok?

You have a nice way of selective quoting. I have actually given additional reasons why I think that Mercedes knew what they were doing. So the "fellacy" isn't quite what you make of it.

I'm quite happy to exit that discussion. I'm equally convinced that all will be much clearer in a short time.

Why would Schumacher have a less potent form of, or no DDRS on his car?
I'm not convinced of this, I think that Nico was on track at the perfect time to put in the perfect lap.
Schumacher didn't bother to challenge after that as the track was cooling rapidly and he knew that he would be starting 2nd on the grid regardless.
It would have been pointless to use up tires in the worsening conditions at a futile attempt for pole when the only man ahead of you is your team mate.

Just a small info, i don't know if it was posted yet:

Paul Hembery said that Ross Brawn told him before the race that they could resolve their tyre issue and fix the problems they had. So yea, didn't look bad, i guess.

Is there possibility Nico cooling duct to be connected with DDRS? I mean ,who need cooling at 22 degree? In connection with "amplified/non-amplified" DDRS. Lets say they have parts for only one car, with the luck MS have I guess Nico get to try it first.

Would not make sense. How and why should the cooling duct be connected with the DDRS? We all saw the pictures of the tubes going from the back of the car to the FW. And they definitely not prefer any driver, i can't really think of that. IMHO it's more likely Nico just likes a bit of cooling, while Schumacher doesn't need it there for this race.

Well why did they run a cooling duct on one car only? I doubt Rosberg would be so much warmer then Schumi, espec in China.

I originally thought that too, but watch him coming out of the last turn. There is no KERS harvest left, yet when he pushes(and holds) that button the DRS is activated.

that is just force of habit
they used to press the KERS all the time coming out of the final corner
so he thought there might be some KERS left and he pressed it
remember they dont have fancy tv overlays while driving

that red button in 100% KERS switch , there are many many onboards confirming it

My first post on this great forum, been a lurker for a long time.

Regarding DRS activation, I was always under the impression that DRS was activated by a pedal placed next to the brake pedal by the driver's left foot. When the DRS pedal was pressed the wing would open and when released the wing would come down because of gravity. I'm a noob and dont know what kind of one way activation is called. Also isnt this the reason that DRS gets deactivated when the driver needs to hit the brakes?

Like I said I'm a noob so maybe the more knowledgable folks out here can enlighten me about it.

Scarbs thinks it was just for cooling:

It might be just that.
