RB aero test device

Post

1) So the mechanism mounted to the chassis will change the height of the test modules while the car is on track?

2) What is the design of the two test pods that measure, possibly, air flow? I assume an opening in the front but see no opening in the rear, so flow does not go through the pod. How does it function? Does that stacked double pod design have significance?

I think they are meassuring pressure distribution behind the wheel.

The devices to do so are so-called pitot tubes. They are visible as an array of grey tubes on the leading edge of the measurement device.

McLaren were the first to introduce one of these - in 2008 or 09?

The driver sets the car at a constant speed and the pitot rake moves up (or down) with each lap to build up a complete picture of the airflow.

I think the pods you refer to are merely streamlining fairings added to the pivots to avoid disrupting the airflow.

interestingly they come up with new measuring gadgets every other week...but heck they found some speed recently.

Do teams use pressure sensitive paint these days .I remember some feature in RCE a decade (?)ago ..
it seems to be tricky at lowish speeds but ..
