Red Bull RB8 Renault

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Possible routes:
1. Green arrow: radiators exhaust
2. Yellow arrow: first tunnel airflow
3. Red arrow: second tunnel airflow
or maybe underneath the Gurney flap over the diffuser

Why they made this cuts which is seen on purple arrows?
Are they trying to copy W03 slots for second tunnel exit or they just follow the trailing edge of the diffuser?

The FIA acknowledges that the engines are still doing some off-throttle trickery, and have approved it on all the different engines. Or so I hear

Purple arrows are modifications to the gurney to match the curved profile of the diffuser edge. I think it's the green arrows and red arrows. The yellow one is too tight and would require more ducts that we couldn't see on the floor or gearbox, which is unlikely.

I'm sorry that my post was rated as "un-useful" which made me receive a -1 rating on a forum I highly respect. I was just applauding the link he posted. I will delete the content.

Thanks,

I haven't heard anything that suggest that is a RBR specific mode.

Don't Red Bull use a THREE cylinder thingie, which has been approved?

We have been though this before. What is the perceive benefit of using cylinder cutting? In this case are we not talking about deceleration activities?

A smaller displacement engine is more efficient than a high displacement engine that is being throttled more.

Cylinder deactivation is not new in F1 and something alot of car manufacturers are now using to 'green' their image as Owen says it give the benefit of drivability as if it's a smaller capacity engine. I'd be surprised if all of the teams didnt utilize it in some way for a cornering advantage.

Ahh This sound , a little "déja vu" .. :?
Wasn't the RB8 using a trick with the mapping at the end of the year ? ( especially in the tests , and Mercedes was against it )
So will the FIA declare this floor Illegal again? ( if they do i am expecting a sanction for Red bull , In French there is a proverb that says " Jamais deux sans trois" ( never two without three) I think the FIA will ban this double floor at silverstone )

But isn't the discussion about the sounds made during deceleration or off throttle periods? What is the requirement for efficiency at this point... or drivability for that matter?

That is at low RPM/low throttle parts. Shutting down some cylinders means less pumping losses in the engine. That's the only reason I can think of.

Under this years Regulations teams can cut 4 cylinders on engine over-run when cars are slowing down. Pretty sure they're cutting the cylinders to control torque in said low speed turns/hairpins etc, a place where the RB has seemed to dominate in the past few years. I would suppose it helps on fuel consumption as well.
