@QLDriver,

Yes -exactly that. Forgot to mention it. Maybe it has something to do with the new upgrades, or the type of asphalt even.

Watching TV, I saw white markings, and the commentators initially thought he was on softs but then changed their minds to mediums.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, because I agree it was an amazing leap in pace. That is why I made sure to look at the tyre sidewall markings - and apparently if I made a mistake so did several others.
I think the leap at that moment to Lewis (fastest then with mediums) was influenced by the fact that he probably had new mediums and he did the lap later than Lewis, who did it with more worn tires and a greener track.

Local commentator was a bit confused and TV coverage also didn't show pit action.

I'm wondering who changed tires during Q3? I assume Alonso and Button as they were in pits, what about the rest? Vettel? Webber? Was Hamilton on same set of tirres for whole Q3?

Only Alonso, Button and Raikkonen were in pits.

I must say that Maldonado is doing a very good job in qualifying. He is putting the car in places that Senna Could only dream about.

Schumacher acknowledged Alonso had the right strategy to use another new set of rain tyres ..So surprise surprise some drivers and teams have always an answer .
If alonso really does bag that title it is well deserved.

Lotus read here:
winning strategy for Grosjean: Pitstop in the first lap from the un-preferred tyre to the preferred one, than one more stop during the race and cowabunga! (In Silverston he would have won, but his pace today was a bit worrying)
Bonus: no need for an overaggressive start reduces the chance to crash with some backmarkers in the first corner
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

Grosjean just didn't look competitive in the dry running in Q1. Then again the Red Bulls didn't look spectacular either and Kimi looked to have a huge advantage over the rest of the field...

Was Kimi running the new rear wing and DRS system on his car?

McLaren are still claiming they're on for a 1-2, they must be really confident the upgrades work in the dry.

I think they have a good chance to win.

They had the fastest car in dry and the DRS zone seems overtake friendly.

Anyone think the Ferraris/Red Bulls/Mercs set their cars up for a wet qualifying while the McLarens didn't?

Could maybe explain the "worrying" pace of Vettel/Schumi/Webber etc in the earlier quali sessions before the rain hit.
