2012 qualifying championship

Post

This is just a little thing that I thought was interesting to do – just to see how people have fared in the races, vs in qualifying- ie how much do they actually capitalise on their qualifying speed? Qualifying points is written, and in brackets is the real standings. Note that the "qualifying points" is based on qualifying, and not grid position. (ie Schumacher in Monaco and Lewis in Spain were given 25 points)

After Australia

Senna %800 and %1600 at some stage in the season lol

I really like your work. Besides a couple of other things, it really shows who kept a cool head in the races and brought home good points.

Performing well In regards to real life points?

Funny that you mention it, because after Spa, I am really thinking that Hulking is really outshining Paul in both Qaulifying and even more so the race... it's just the odd bit of bad strategy by the team why Hulk aint smashing him. British media will never let you hear of Hulks good performances though... neither Sky nor BBC made mention of the glaringly obvious today.

Cheers Shrieker, thanks.

Actually the highest Senna had was 1800% (when he had 1 qualifying point, for 18 race points) in Hungary/Hockenheim

These really aren't in any way definitive nor conclusive of anything. Factors such as race pace vs qualifying pace, etc all cloud the picture, in case you're thinking the percentage counts show definitively which drivers (and their teams) have wrung the maximum out of their packages. But a driver underqualifying his car (ie slow in qualifying) while having a consistent race pace, versus the other way around (take Maldonado vs Senna as an example, I guess) can cloud the picture too.

But when it gets to the sharp end, then generally they can be taken sort of as such. For example it's very clear that Jenson Button is quite the "par player" - he has just about as many points as he has qualifying points.

It's still not perfect though - and as any quantitative metric, it can never tell the full picture. For example - Webber has a higher conversion rate than Vettel at 117.9%, while Vettel has 106.9%. But Vettel has more points on the board. I'd still take Vettel's championship position over Webber's position (as of the current points numbers) any day.

Re Hulkenberg vs Di Resta, I always thought that Hulkenberg was the better driver, and I always said he would beat Di Resta. I owe the closeness between the two because of Hulkenberg not having a handle on the Pirellis. Di Resta's best result in his two Force India years is 5th in Singapore (IIRC), and Hulkenberg has gotten past that today.

It does however, show how badly affected Hamilton has been by McLaren's early season shenanigans.

With the rest of the team effectively taking (huge) points off of him on their own, there is no room for racing incidents or punctures (or anything else).

So when these things do eventually happen, they have a huge effect on his championship, compared to Alonso who has had a consistent Ferrari behind him which means that he can crash out of a race and still lead by just under a race victory.

When you add the fact that you could probably count the amount of times he's been overtaken on track in 2012 on one hand, it only helps strengthen that argument.

More accurately - it shows how Hamilton and/or his engineering team and pit crew have not capitalised on their qualifying speed. The numbers don't apportion blame to anyone anywhere.

Indeed, but there are races that stand out where its quite obvious where the points went. Bahrain, China, Spain etc.

Not saying that your stats show it specifically, but coupled with what other info we do have regarding the subject (i.e. who it was that made the mistakes that lead to points loss), it makes the overall picture much clearer.

I think it's interesting how, comparitively, high up Schumacher is, which shows how badly let down he's been by reliability this year.

It also shows that for pure pace he's actually pulling ahead of Rosberg, which I think has slowly been happening for a while now. Would be such a shame if he retired again now.

Exactly. The guy is in his best form since his return to F1. Mercedes really need to get their act together and improve. Drivers are the ones who lose here. It is very sad for MSC at the moment :(

Very interesting stastistics, thx ray.

I do not agree though with the conclusion that it shows race craft or cocking up by teams/drivers.

Alonso for example has very good race performance according to the data, but many points were gifted to him by DNFs or other bad performances. Vettel for example is now at roughly 100% which would mean that he's performed according to his qualy results....in real life however he has lost many points by reliability failures as in Monza, Valencia etc.

Taking the data for each individual driver though and adding the things that happened in the races it can be used to measure how well a driver performed related to the theoretical performance of the car.
